3 stars, 3 observations from Wisconsin women's hockey's shutout of St. Thomas

lacrossetribune.com 13-01-2024 11:48 5 Minutes reading
Badgers coach Mark Johnson and players Chayla Edwards and Cassie Hall talk about working through the middle part of the season. The first time that Sarah Wozniewicz scored multiple goals this season, the University of Wisconsin women's hockey team reached double digits in offense. The first time that Cassie Hall scored more than once this season, the Badgers also cracked the 10-goal mark. There wasn't a third instance Saturday but it was through no fault of Hall or Wozniewicz in Wisconsin's 7-0 victory over St. Thomas at LaBahn Arena. Wozniewicz needed less than 12 minutes to record her first multiple-goal game since the Badgers defeated Boston College 12-2 on Oct. 6. Wozniewicz added a third goal with the Badgers skating short-handed late in the third period for her first collegiate hat trick. It had been a while since those games so their return to scoring in pairs was welcome for the third-ranked Badgers, who won their fourth straight and passed Minnesota for second place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Wisconsin scored four goals in the first period for the second straight game; they also did so last Saturday in a 6-1 win over Merrimack. They had just one game with at least four goals in the first period in the first 19 contests this season -- five against Minnesota State on Oct. 12. The lead let the Badgers (17-4, 11-4 WCHA, 34 points) coast to a 10th win in as many games against St. Thomas (7-15, 1-14, 3 points), a team in its third season at the Division I level and in the WCHA. Wozniewicz and Hall each had a nice effort for her second goal of the opening period. Wozniewicz scored on a breakaway for a 3-0 lead, beating Tommies goalie Maggie Malecha high to the glove side. Hall took it up a notch, finding a sliver of space for a sharp-angle backhand from the left side on the power play to make it 4-0. Here are the three stars and three things that stood out. Three stars No. 3: Cassie Hall, Wisconsin. It was her third straight game with a goal. No. 2: Maddi Wheeler, Wisconsin. She added three assists to her second-period goal. No. 1: Sarah Wozniewicz, Wisconsin. She had 10 of the Badgers' 51 shots on goal. A return for Caroline Harvey Caroline Harvey looked to be back to normal in the opening seconds after she missed last week's nonconference victories over Merrimack with a lower-body injury. 3 stars, 3 things that stood out in Wisconsin women's hockey's runaway win Harvey, the All-American defenseman who missed seven games in October and November because of a knee injury unrelated to her latest absence, was up at the top of the St. Thomas crease for an offensive chance around 20 seconds into the game. Skating is a huge part of Harvey's game, and she didn't seem to be limited in that area. She also got high up in the air to snag a puck that St. Thomas cleared into the neutral zone on a second-period Wisconsin power play. The Badgers need Harvey playing at her best in February and March, and she showed a good step toward that Saturday. An illness shuffled Wisconsin's forward lines Leading scorer Kirsten Simms missed the game because of an illness, forcing the Badgers to temporarily give a new look for their top line. Maddi Wheeler moved into Simms' spot alongside Casey O'Brien and Laila Edwards, and Wheeler scored the Badgers' fifth goal early in the second period. All three lines -- Wisconsin has only nine healthy forwards and played Katie Kotlowski and Sophie Helgeson on defense -- had a hand in the attack. Kelly Gorbatenko played on the left side with Marianne Picard and Wozniewicz on the third line. Britta Curl, Hall and Lacey Eden stayed together as the second line. Simms missed her first game since Nov. 18. The Badgers put up another zero Jane Gervais earned her fifth shutout of the season with 10 saves but there was a long stretch where she didn't have to do much work thanks to the Badgers controlling possession. St. Thomas wasn't credited with a shot attempt for 12½ minutes, a stretch covering parts of the second and third periods. The Tommies were stuck on six shots on goal for 15 minutes until a third-period power play. Wisconsin has blanked opponents eight times this season.
