DSS reportedly tortures 45-year-old woman to death in Nasarawa

dailypost.ng 09-01-2024 07:56 2 Minutes reading
The Nasarawa State Command of the Department of State Services, DSS, has been accused of torturing a 45-year-old woman, Salamatu Adamu, in its custody to death. The victim, a mother of two girls and a boy, was engaged in grain grinding business in front of her residence at Tudun Kofa in Lafia. According to reports, the tragic incident stems from Adamu's arrest in connection with a kidnapping case. An unidentified little boy from the area was reportedly abducted, leading to the accusation that Adamu knew the whereabouts of the missing child. The accuser, believed to be in DSS custody, alleged in a confessional statement that Adamu was seen chasing children who were obstructing her business. The family of the deceased, through their counsel, Abubakar Abubakar Dogara, and eight others of A. A. Dogara & Co, submitted a complaint letter to the Director General of the DSS at the National Headquarters in Abuja. The letter, dated November 17, 2023, alleged the unlawful detention, torture, and eventual death of Salamatu Adamu, calling for a thorough investigation and justice. The husband of the deceased, Mr. Musa Shittu Mohammed, appealed to the DSS Director General for fairness and justice. The family's legal representative stated that if justice is not served, they would be compelled to explore legal avenues against the security establishment. An eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that Salamatu was forcibly taken by individuals dressed in black, thrown into a vehicle, and subjected to physical abuse. The witness disclosed that she was asked to kneel down while being beaten. The spokesperson for the DSS in Nasarawa, Mr. Muhammed Musa, declined to comment on the matter, saying he needed permission from the national headquarters. The national spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, promised to provide information once properly briefed but had not responded by the time of compiling this report.

Supreme Court judgement: Mutfwang commends Tinubu's neutrality

Following the affirmation of his election as Governor of Plateau State on Friday, Caleb Mutfwang has commended President Bola Tinubu's neutrality and the courage of the Justices of the Supreme Court. He also said their actions have left an indelible mark on the hearts of the people of Plateau State who are rolling out drums to celebrate his victory at the Supreme Court. He acknowledged that power comes from God and called on the people to unite and give him the maximum support to deliver good governance. The governor was received on his return from Abuba by a large crowd at the Yakubu Gowon Airport before making his way through the line-up of citizens along the highways to a grand reception at the Langfield Resort in Jos. Addressing the mammoth crowd, Mutfwang said, "God is the giver of power, we know no one but we know God, and he looked at us with mercy and gave us victory. "Thank you, God, thank you Plateau people, thank you, Mr President, thank you Supreme Court for doing the right thing. "This is the gathering of Plateau people, it is beyond PDP. We have always believed in the judiciary as an institution, our respect and belief in justice was restored." According to him, "What the people of Plateau, Nigerians have done has spurred me and I will continue to live for the interest of Plateau and bring good governance to the people." Also speaking, former Governor of the State, Jonah Jang, called for unity among citizens. Jang said, "I only give glory to God for this victory. If there is any party without structure in Plateau State, it is the APC people who walked out during their congress and the former governor announced the APC flag bearers. "Their state chairman didn't buy form but that was not our business. Governor Mutfwang is a man with a lion's heart, he is a God-given governor. "Plateau people prayed, Nigerians prayed, people around the world prayed and God answered the people's prayers and touched the heart of the Justices of Supreme Court of Nigeria and they brought the truth out. "Mutfwang should forgive, but when you see any wrong done to Plateau people, look into it according to the law. "Now is the time for governance, I challenge you to work and surpass my record."
